The Crackle Nail Varnish Craze

I am only recently up to speed with this 'crackle effect' Nail varnish, sadly something I discovered when working on a TV show that featured fashionable tween and teenage girls! Watching through the footage from the shoot, one of the young girls was painting her little sister's nails and was talking about the "how cool the crackle one looks". Baffled, and feeling a bit past it, I endeavoured to find out more. And the effect? I have now succumbed (well and truly) to the trend, despite being 23 years old and not 12...

I can only recommend that everyone releases their inner child and tries this out, because no matter how silly you think it is, it is most definitely fun to do. Apparently, Katy Perry has long been on the trend - and surely this fact can only persuade you further.

Choose a normal nail varnish of a good bold colour, and paint your nails as you would normally. The magic part happens 20 minutes later after your colourful base coat is dry. This is when you apply the 'crackle' top coat. Apply it normally as you would any nail varnish and then watch it shrink and crack as it dries, revealing the colour underneath. Choosing your colour combinations can take ages, so if you are as indecisive as me, start off simple. (After much deliberation) I went with black and a silvery gold.

The method in action using Barry M black crackle over gold, as demonstrated by Mei-Lian.

My research informed me that there are many good brands selling various fun colours. You can find pricier ones by good brands like Opi, Models Co, Nails Inc and Sally Hensen. Or, perhaps if you are not yet a crackle convert, go with the cheap and cheerful brands that are no doubt equally as effective like Barry M and No.17 (Boots own brand) which are only about £3-4 each.

Having now tried and tested both the Barry M and No.17, there is a noticeable difference in the crackle effect. Which one you prefer is up to you!

A good friend has the Barry M crackle in black, which looks fantastic over a thick metallic gold - kind of a leopard print effect (with thanks again to Mei-Lian for being my hand model):

Now for the No.17 crackle in a silvery gold on thick black that I tried out for myself. It produces much more of a stripey effect. If we are sticking with the animal theme, I'd say more zebra like than the Barry M leopard print look. Although one guy in my office commented that the effect on my thumbnail looked like a graph of the stock market crash...

You can buy both nail varnishes that I've reviewed online of course. Happy Crackling!

Hola from fashionable Espana with new Spring Styles

Fashion @ Your Fingertips is currently having a lovely time researching trends in the South of Spain at the moment. The sun is shining here and we are very ready to bring home Spring style.

Here is what we have picked up from the sun-kissed Spaniards...

Little lace-up brogues are back for spring/summer coupled with culottes and a summery shirt:
Brogues from Topshop with...
Culottes in 'rust' from Miss Selfridge or these silk corset shorts in mustard from Topshop with...
Urban Outfitters sheer nude/cream blouse perfect with high waisted skirts and shorts.

As for the accessories, vintage-stlye leather backpacks are everywhere in Spain, especially in the South where they get a lot of camel leather exported from North Africa. Picture yourself in your spring outfit, riding your bike with its quaint wicker basket through sun lit cobbled streets sporting your drawstring backpack...

If you don't happen to be heading to Southern Spain anytime soon, check this £35 canvas alternative from ASOS.com:

Or if satchel style backpacks aren't your thing, we like this little £30 shoulder bag, perfect for going out at night and wondering about town in the day:

Besos from Spain! xxx

Lily Allen's new shop 'Lucy in Disguise' hits Covent Garden

Lucy in Disguise, lucyindisguiselondon.com, is described by its cofounders Lily Allen and Sarah Owen as "the place where the vintage loving girl can buy or hire desirable pieces from whichever decade she chooses. Housed under one roof, beaded dresses from the 20’s, evening gowns from the 30’s...Ossie Clark and Biba from the 60’s and 70’s, sequins and sparkle from the 70’s and 80’s, whether you want to look like Bianca at Studio 54 or Twiggy sashaying down the King’s road in ’67, you’ll find the right look for you at LID."

Essentially you can borrow gorgeous designer pieces off them that you would never normally be able to afford! Furthermore they have a blow dry bar and a vintage salon to add the finishing touches to your hair and makeup. Anna Lou of London does Festival Chic...

Bestival 2010 is not far away, (fingers crossed this weather picks up!!) and for those lucky people who are going check out these cute accessories by Anna Lou of London. Keep in mind that if you spend over 40 quid she'll give you a free festival kit including new Nivea SPF20 Sun Lotion, SPF30 Nivea Lip Balm, Face Off Cleansing Wipes by Eyeko, and nifty make-up bag courtesy of Clippy Kit... PLUS there is free delivery on all orders over 25 squids.

A little bag to carry round your essentials is, well essential. You don't want a big clumpy handbag when you're trying to dance, or generally just running around drunk... Anna Lou's Goldie Festival Bag for £35 is the perfect solution, or Anna Lou's I heart London and I heart Paris bumbags, £20-25 each:

Accessory wise, (although admittedly not essential!), I drawn to this cute £15 miniature wellie pendant which is extra fitting giving the relentless rain in the UK at the moment...

Talking of wellies has reminded me (!), it is not uncommon for wellies to rub on those bare legs so get some knee high socks to protect those lovely calves, Eg. Miss Selfridge do some pretty vintage floral knee socks for £6.

Find more Anna Lou jewellery, hair accessories & bags at Anna Lou of London - We recommend taking a look at her Disney collection! FF x

Animal Prints in D&G new collection

D&G  A/W 2010

Above: Madonna, photographed for D&G by Steven Klein, posing in the new animal print inspired D& G collection with a poor baby looking pretty unimpressed... As far as my research permits, it seems this baby is not yet another to be adopted by M and is unfortunate enough, or indeed lucky enough, to be a prop.

Animal prints are all over D&G and Cavalli Catwalks this A/W 2010 but for something a bit cheaper for us online shoppers check out boohoo.com's Animal Magic collection.

I like this leopard print shift dress in grey (pictured here in brown), at only £18.

Or if you are feeling fashionably daring, have a look at boohoo's leopard print playsuit, £25;

Urban accessories at UrbanOutfitters.co.uk

I love Urban Outfitters, I never fail to lust after something having browsed the store or the website. Here are my latest longings;

I saw these ankle boots in Tan (they also come in black) in the London Oxford St Urban Outfitters store and fell in love with them. Turns out they are an exclusive to the website and the Oxford St branch, so if you are not in London (or can't face the crowds) I suggest buying them online.

These cut-out initial heart pendant necklaces also caught my eye, they do every letter of the alphabet so you can either get one for yourself with your own first initial or get one for a deserving friend.

Finally, a favourite pick from their sale items is these wedge shoes that I have owned the black pair since June and thus can personally testify that they are incredibly comfortable as high heeled shoes go, my only issue is (luckily for you guys) now they are almost half price! Buckle Wedge, Black or Taupe, was £85, now £40...
